SUMMARY:Edible Campus Autumn Cook Up
DESCRIPTION:Join us and the St Andrews Tennis Club at their courts for an open fire cook up on Friday 12th of November. We’ll be harvesting from a few of our own gardens as well as the allotment behind the tennis club for seasonal veg to cook with. What’s on the menu? Who knows! Depends what we end up harvesting. But I tell you what\, it’ll be delicious! \nWhether you garden with us already\, interested in getting involved or simply love a seasonal cook up\, then grab a mate and come on down! As it’ll be an open fire cook up\, you may learn a thing or to about serving up a smashing meal outdoors. A great way to impress the crowd at your next camping trip or beach bonfire. \nThe 12th of November also marks the final day of COP26. Who knows what ups and downs the next couple weeks will bring. Perhaps the energy of a positive conference can revive our local ambitions for a resilient food network in St Andrews!

SUMMARY:St Andrews alumni in green careers
DESCRIPTION:Has COP26 inspired you to work in an environmental or sustainability related field after you graduate? Come along to our panel discussion and meet some St Andrews graduates who have done just that! Find out more about how they approached their careers and discover what it takes to work for a better future. \nKeynote speaker and Moderator: Sofie Bøgger\nSofie is currently a second-year student at St. Andrews\, pursuing a joint degree in International Relations & Sustainable Development. Alongside her studies Sofie manages her start-up ‘Concept Zero.’ Co-founded in 2018\, the Scandinavian retail brand is dedicated to providing zero waste alternatives to single use products. Sofie is also working remotely as a part-time Sustainability Associate with OnePointFive; a new-age sustainability consultancy with a mission to limit global temperature increases to 1.5°C. Locally in St. Andrews\, she is a part of the Environment Subcommittee and is an Advisor to the Environmental Sustainability Board. She has also recently joined a team of undergraduate research assistants to explore and support ESG implementation. In her gap years before joining the University\, Sofie has been involved with various environmental and social-impact projects centred around regenerative design\, food systems\, green architecture and sustainability education. \nOur furthers speakers are: \nHanna Plant\nHanna is from Edinburgh and plays an active role in driving the circular economy in Scotland as a Senior Consultant for waste and resources consultancy Resource Futures. She graduated from the University of St Andrews with an MA Honours in Sustainable Development and has over 10 years’ experience in behaviour change and sustainability projects. Hanna was previously Waste Team Manager at Scotland’s largest environmental charity\, Changeworks. She has also trained and supported hundreds of sustainability graduates to develop ‘the skills of a change agent’ during her time as Education Projects Manager with Change Agents UK. She was recognised in the late Sustainable Development Commission’s Young Scottish Greens list for her community mobilisation for social justice and sustainability campaigns during her time at St Andrews\, and was a founding member of Scotland’s 2050 Climate Group. \nSam Bruce\nSam Bruce is the co-founder of Much Better Adventures\, a multi-award winning travel company focused on benefiting local communities\, reducing carbon emissions and backing important conservation work. He also co-produced ‘Adventures Not Dams’\, a documentary film and campaign to save the last wild river in Europe. Sam graduated from the University of St Andrews with a Bachelors in Sustainable Development and Management in 2010 and was recognised as the ‘Young Travel Entrepreneur of the Year’ by the Travel and Hospitality Hall of Fame in 2017. \nMuch Better Adventures also spearheaded the ‘Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency’ movement to accelerate climate action across the entire tourism industry. In collaboration with the UNEP\, UNWTO\, The Travel Foundation and Visit Scotland\, Tourism Declares’ original climate emergency declaration has now been adopted as the central tourism industry framework for climate action\, and will be launched at COP26 in November as the ‘Glasgow Declaration’ – a much needed co-ordinated plan for practical climate action in the tourism industry. \nLéa Weimann\nLéa Weimann is a passionate eco-activist who has organised environmental campaigns in South Africa\, Germany\, and the UK. She runs her own blog and podcast “Eco-Activist Journeys”. Léa co-organised and led four global climate marches in St Andrews\, including the Line in the Sand event\, and was the Students’ Association Environment Officer 2020-21. Furthermore\, Léa was Advisor to the Environmental Sustainability Board that set up the new Environmental Sustainability Strategy for the University. Léa graduated from the University of St Andrews with a first class degree in International Relations and Sustainable Development in June 2021 and received the Principal’s Medal for her community service\, climate activism\, and academic achievements. She has published a non-for-profit poetry book called DEAR EARTH which was launched in St Andrews in March 2020. Currently she is studying for an LLM in Global Environment and Climate Change Law at the University of Edinburgh.

SUMMARY:Building Carbon Literacy for Accounting and Finance
DESCRIPTION:Join academics and professionals to discuss the contribution of accounting and finance to achieving net-zero carbon ambitions.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe climate emergency requires institutions and professionals that are equipped to understand\, assess and contribute to climate action to achieve net-zero carbon ambitions. Decisions must be informed by a robust and meaningful evaluation of their carbon consequences\, resource requirements and impacts on connected systems. Public and private accounting and finance are central to these decisions. Most solutions will pass through a series of financial accounting\, carbon accounting\, assurance and financing methods. Unfortunately\, conventional models and tools are unable to correctly value climate change impacts. No matter how effective new products\, new provisions or financial services are at reducing carbon emissions\, innovations may be rejected if evaluated by existing accounting tools\, financial models and professionals who cannot correctly understand and account for climate impacts. Accounting and finance professionals are tasked with providing evidence to critical decisions upon which climate action depends. Yet\, little is known about the education\, knowledge\, skills and capabilities of this community to support their work. \nThe free event is co-hosted by Centre for Social and Environmental Accounting Research\, Lloyds Centre for Responsible Business and the Centre for Responsible Banking and Finance. The event is supported by the Royal Society of Edinburgh COP 26 International Climate Change Network Grant. \nClick here to register for this event

SUMMARY:Energy Ethics 2021: Energy Transitions & Planetary Futures
DESCRIPTION:Energy demand is growing\, while urgent calls to reduce and mitigate the environmental impact of carbon emissions are intensifying. Transitioning our societies to low-carbon economies seems both inevitable and essential to planetary survival. In the lead-up to COP26\, the Centre for Energy Ethics is hosting a virtual conference to reflect carefully and critically on envisioned energy transitions and what they might entail. Bringing together researchers across the arts\, humanities\, social and natural sciences\, we ask: what visions of society and planetary futures are being put forth by ‘energy transitions’ around the world? What will their implications be? And how will they be realised?

SUMMARY:Mock COP
DESCRIPTION:As we prepare for the UN United Nations Climate Change Conference\, also known as COP26\, the University of St Andrews’ Centre for Energy Ethics & Model United Nations Society invite all Postgraduate Taught (Masters) students at the University of St Andrews to participate in a: \nOur Mock COP will use the Model UN format to re-create COP26 negotiations and provide a unique insight into the ways in which the UN Conferences of Parties (COPs) work. \nEach participant will join a group representing one of the key parties at COP to debate and negotiate critical resolutions related to energy and climate change. \nThere are few better ways of understanding international affairs and global politics than putting yourself ‘in the shoes of world leaders’ – and few (if any) issues more critical than those of climate change. \nThe event will offer a great opportunity to all participants to hone and develop their debating\, teamwork\, negotiation and public speaking skills; and meet other Masters students from across the University. Those familiar with the Model UN format will vouch that it will also be a very interesting\, at times hilarious\, always informative and often surprising day – in all the best possible ways. \nAll participants will receive appropriate training\, and the session will be facilitated by Model UN experts. \nThe event is open to Masters students from all schools and departments at the University of St Andrews\, and free. We anticipate that the event will be held in person\, in the prestigious Parliament Hall (pending health and safety regulations). \nTo take part in the event\, please e-mail Dr Emilka Skrzypek with an expression of interest by Monday\, 4th October. SUMMARY:The Chemistry of Nature Based Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Nature Based Solutions (NBS) involve the protection and restoration of ecosystems with the intention of slowing further climate change or adapting to its effects. They may involve a wide range of different ecosystems from largely untouched forests and wetlands\, to city parks\, mangroves and agricultural land managed to the benefit of biodiversity and people. However\, the underlying chemical processes in the storage and release of carbon and nitrogen are often overlooked. This panel will introduce the field of NBS and discuss the chemistry occurring in different ecosystems. \nSpeakers: \nDr Caroline Gauchotte-Lindsay\, Chair\nUniversity of Glasgow\, United Kingdom \nProf Peter Smith\nUniversity of Aberdeen\, United Kingdom \nDr Cécile Girardin\nUniversity of Oxford\, United Kingdom \nProf William Austin\nUniversity of St Andrews \, United Kingdom
