SUMMARY:Mock COP
DESCRIPTION:As we prepare for the UN United Nations Climate Change Conference\, also known as COP26\, the University of St Andrews’ Centre for Energy Ethics & Model United Nations Society invite all Postgraduate Taught (Masters) students at the University of St Andrews to participate in a: \nOur Mock COP will use the Model UN format to re-create COP26 negotiations and provide a unique insight into the ways in which the UN Conferences of Parties (COPs) work. \nEach participant will join a group representing one of the key parties at COP to debate and negotiate critical resolutions related to energy and climate change. \nThere are few better ways of understanding international affairs and global politics than putting yourself ‘in the shoes of world leaders’ – and few (if any) issues more critical than those of climate change. \nThe event will offer a great opportunity to all participants to hone and develop their debating\, teamwork\, negotiation and public speaking skills; and meet other Masters students from across the University. Those familiar with the Model UN format will vouch that it will also be a very interesting\, at times hilarious\, always informative and often surprising day – in all the best possible ways. \nAll participants will receive appropriate training\, and the session will be facilitated by Model UN experts. \nThe event is open to Masters students from all schools and departments at the University of St Andrews\, and free. We anticipate that the event will be held in person\, in the prestigious Parliament Hall (pending health and safety regulations). \nTo take part in the event\, please e-mail Dr Emilka Skrzypek with an expression of interest by Monday\, 4th October. SUMMARY:Look to nature – the power of nature-based solutions to tackle climate change
DESCRIPTION:From trees and peat to saltmarsh and seaweed. Find out more about how we can mitigate climate change through Scotland’s precious natural assets and ecosystems. \nNature-based solutions (NbS) are solutions to societal challenges that involve working with nature to deliver benefits for both people and biodiversity. In this event we aim to explain the role that NbS can play in the mitigation of climate change and other major challenges such as disaster risk reduction. We also explain why this concept is becoming so key to Scotland’s plans to tackle the climate emergency and how the University of St Andrews is leading the way. \nHosted by Sir Ian Boyd\, Professor of Biology and Co-Chair of the First Minister’s Environmental Council\, our expert speakers will include: \n\nDr Clive Mitchell\, Outcome Manager: Nature and Climate Change at NatureScot\nProfessor William Austin\, Chair of the Scottish Blue Carbon Forum and Professor in the School of Geography & Sustainable Development\, University of St Andrews\nProfessor Anne Magurran\, Professor of Ecology and Evolution in the Centre for Biological Diversity and Scottish Oceans Institute at the University of St Andrews\n\nThe evening will include networking opportunities\, followed by keynote presentations on the subject of nature-based solutions and an opportunity to put your questions to the speakers. \nBook your ticket here \nNumbers are limited to allow participants to physically distance if they wish \nThis is one of a series of events from the University of St Andrews marking the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26)\, a pivotal point in our fight against the devastation of climate change.
